Why Inbound Marketing is Different Than Digital Marketing

Posted by Lisa Smith on Nov 11, 2016 11:00:00 AM

Inbound marketing vs digital marketing

Here’s the age-old question: What is the difference between digital and inbound marketing?  Well, maybe it can’t be an age-old question when neither digital nor inbound are older than a recent college graduate.

Surprisingly, a cone is a great way to differentiate the two.  A cone is a simple shape, but it comes in handy for this comparison. A cheerleader’s megaphone, for example, is used to shout messages for everyone to hear. In a nutshell, that’s digital marketing.

Imagine you are visiting a new city and  want to know the best places to eat so you pull up Google maps and type “restaurants” in the search box.  Nothing comes up. So you try “food”, then “fast food”, then “I’m hungry find me a place to eat!” None of these work. You try the “explore food & drinks near you” option and your map returns an “I have no clue where you are” message. Hmmmm.

Have you ever come up with an ingenious food combination that most people wouldn’t think could possibly be good? Like the classic potato chips-in-sandwich union? Or the broccoli and Cheetos bowl? Don’t forget the Sriracha and peanut butter burger (we’re very serious).

Just like these unique combinations, graphic design and marketing are two very distinct disciplines — which together can create something magical (like a grilled ham and Doritos sandwich).

Common Misconceptions of Inbound Marketing

Do you know what these three statements have in common?
Napoleon was short.
Bulls hate the color red.
Wait thirty minutes after eating before swimming.

That’s right, they’re all common misconceptions that have been circulating for decades. If you want the facts (and we’re big on facts), Napoleon was taller than the average French man of his time at a whopping 5’7”, bulls are colorblind, and eating before swimming does not increase your risk of cramping up in the water.

People get carried away with misconceptions. After all, if you read it on the internet it must be true, right?

After working a long day at the office, isn’t it nice to come back to a clean, beautiful home that houses a perfect family, with dinner on the table and a loyal pet at your feet?

In a perfect world, sure. But, I think we all know the reality. After work, you go to pick up one child from practice, then another child from rehearsal — only to discover that the “rehearsal” was actually the main performance. You apologize, then scramble to find a fast food venue that satisfies everyone. But (whoops), you forgot to get gas and now your car is puttering as you finally pull into your driveway at 9 p.m. And the madness of everyday life will start again tomorrow…with an empty gas tank.
